An M193 ball cartridge has a 55 grain projectile with a full metal jacket, and which ends in a boat tail. The bullet’s jacket inhibits terminal expansion, although it may still permit some fragmentation to take place. It functions to aid in reliable feeding, and further keeps the bore more clear of lead residue. Federal spends the resources necessary to ensure their jackets possess the concentricity that promotes straight flight. The bullet’s boat tail essentially makes it more aerodynamic, enabling it to retain greater velocity downrange and transfer more energy on impact. That tapered base makes a flatter shooting bullet that will remain supersonic well beyond its conventional effective range.
