10/18/24 – This is a good example of a French M1886 Lebel bayonet made for WW1. This bayonet is what is often referred to as a cut down model, as the original M1886’s had a 20.5 inch blade. This particular variant of the M1886 bayonet appears to be a transitional version as it has the shortened Rosalie cruciform blade but still has the quillon, which is the hooked handguard. The blade on this bayonet is in good condition but does have patina throughout. The blade has its original edges with no signs of sharpening. The handle on the bayonet is in good condition and is serial numbered “5N101”. The mechanism for locking the bayonet to the rifle is still functional. The scabbard for this bayonet remains straight and has no dents. There are signs of oxidation on the scabbard, but nothing that impacts its function.
